The NSLU2, known affectionately as the Slug, is a cheap simple device that can do many things beside its original designed function as a NAS.

Software

  • Unslung The simplest alternative to the Slug's default Linux installation.
  • thttpd A tiny web server, used for the Slug's default intranet interface.

Tips and Traps

  • Management Password Demand. If you format a secondary disk, after your primary disk has been unslung, you may find yourself faced with a demand for a 2nd, ”Management” password whenever you log into the secure part of the web interface. The work-around is simple, if not entirely obvious. The first password you supply is your normal admin password; the new, 2nd, login is just “admin” for the user and “admin” for the password.
  • Backup Jobs. If you make any change to the definition of a backup job, the remote system's login and password are deleted but the deletion is not shown on the web form. This means that the job will fail and you'll wonder why! So, always re-enter the remote system's login and password whenever you touch a backup job definition.
