The Challenge

A defence engineering organisation needed to integrate data from legacy systems and a new SAP ERP platform into its enterprise data warehouse and analytics environment. The programme spanned three sites and required secure, reliable data pipelines that met strict defence security and compliance requirements.

The organisation needed a scalable data engineering solution that would support self-service analytics while maintaining secure access to operational information, including making trusted data available for downstream analytics within Palantir Foundry and providing the governed data foundations required to create a self-service ontology

Our Approach

Security-cleared SAP BW and data platform engineers were brought in to build the data foundations across three defence sites. The work covered legacy-to-SAP mapping, ETL pipeline design and analytical data models for reporting and self-service analysis, including data prepared for downstream use within Palantir Foundry.,

This created a secure pathway from operational source systems through to the organisation's analytics layer, including the creation of a self-service ontology within Palantir Foundry. Governed data was structured into meaningful operational objects and relationships to support secure data discovery and self-service analytics. Security requirements were treated as part of the build. The business intelligence interface, access monitoring and governance controls were configured alongside the data flows rather than added after delivery.

What We Delivered

The delivery included legacy-to-SAP field mapping, tested ETL scripts for each site and SAP BW content to support ECC data extracts. Phase 1 analytical models were produced, including data structures and flows alongside the creation of a self-service Palantir Foundry Ontology. Governed data was modelled into reusable operational objects and relationships providing users with a controlled way to discover, understand and analyse operational data. and its ontology layer, where governed data could be represented through meaningful operation objects and relationships. The business intelligence interface was configured and a SOC-integrated access audit and alert tool was implemented.

Maintenance procedures and data flow documentation were also handed over so the platform could be supported after the initial build.

Outcomes and Impact

Secure SAP data pipelines were established across three defence sites, creating the base layer for enterprise reporting and analytics, including downstream use within Palantir Foundry. Authorised users gained access to self-service analysis within a security-controlled environment, while data access controls were configured to meet internal compliance requirements.

The delivery also created both the core data foundations and Palantir Foundry Ontology required to support secure self-service analytics and wider future data capability across the organisation.
